Prague history in dates - for quick orientation
Around 6000 B.C - the oldest evidence of human habitation in the Prague valley (Germanic and Celtic tribes)
5th-6th century - arrival of the Slavs
end of 9th century (870-890) - foundation of Prague Castle as the residence of Bohemian princes from the Premyslid House
965 - Prague is mentioned in the travel report of Ibrahim Ibn Jakub, an Arabic merchant as "the town built of stone and lime, the big town of commerce".
973 - foundation of Prague bishopric.
10th century - foundation of Vysehrad Castle
on the opposite Vltava bank of the river. (However, according to
myths Vysehrad was built earlier than Prague Castle and was the
residence of princess Libuse who prophesied the foundation of Prague
"the city, the fame of which would rise to the stars.")

since 1158 Prague was the capital of the Bohemian Kingdom. (Vratislav I. became a king already in 1085, but his elevation was not inheritable.)
1172 - construction of Judita's Bridge, the 2nd
stone bridge in Central Europe (torn down by flood in 1342).
13th-14th century - the town extended on both banks of the Vltava river (around 1230 - Old Town, 1257 - Lesser Town, around 1320 - Hradcany).
1306 - assassination of Vaclav (Wenceslaus) III., the last Premyslid king, in Olomouc
1310 - ascension of the Luxembourg dynasty on the throne of the Bohemian Kingdom
1338 - Foundation of the Old Town Hall
1344 - Prague bishopric upgraded to archbishopric, beginning of St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert Cathedral (finished 1929).

1346-1378 - Charles IV. epoch - Prague was the capital
of the Holy Roman Empire.
1348 - Foundation of New Town and the first university
in Central Europe (today known as Charles University).
1419 - the first Prague defenestration which openly started the Husites revolutionary movement
1526 - Habsburg dynasty ascended the Bohemian throne (til 1918)
1583-1611 - during the reign of Rudolf II. Prague
again became the Emperor's residence and centre of the arts, scientific
research and diplomatic activity.
1618 - the second Prague defenestration
1620 - battle at White Mountain (Bila hora)
just outside the walls of Prague, in which the Czech nobles uprised
against Habsburg monarchy were defeated.
1784 - Union of the four hitherto independent Prague urban units (Hradcany, Lesser Town, Old Town and New Town).

1875 - abolition of the medivial fortification and walls to enable the growing the city
1918 - proclamation of independence of Czechoslovakia, Prague became a capital of the new republic (October 28).
1939-1945 - Occupation by the Nazi Germany.
1945 - the Prague uprising (May 5), liberation of Prague (May 9).
1968 - Prague Spring - an attempt to reform socialism, intervention of five states of the Warsaw Pact.
1989 - Velvet revolution (November 17)
1993 - Czechoslovakian Federation splits up, formation of the Czech Republic (January 1).
2002 - (August 12-15) the worst floods in last two centuries with the Vltava water table four meters above normal state.
