The world was astounded in 1913 when it was discovered that as many as 19 types of beer were brewed in Mesopotamia 5,000 years ago. It is fitting that the archaeologist who first deciphered the Sumerian tablets containing this information was a Czech, Bedrich Hrozny. Beer was also brewed in the earliest Czech civilizations (there is evidence that hops were already being cultivated here in 859 and were being exported in 903 - the first written documentation referring to brewing dates from 1088).
Beer is considered a part of the national heritage of the Czech Republic.
Simply, the tradition of beer is deep and the beer produced in Czech Republic is top quality. Most famous breweries are in Plzen – Czech Pilsner, Ceske Budejovice – (the true) Budvar but they are also in Prague.
After the velvet revolution there where many family breweries returned to private hands and reestablished and also in present time you can many small beer pots (micro breweries) in specialized beer restaurants in Prague where you can find fancy beers in a great variation.
Among the most famous of the reestablished private breweries are the family brewery Bernard and Lobkowicz. Whose marks are not so well known but are exceptional in quality. It is worth to find a pub where they serve them and try them out.
